Program Basics
Q: How long is the program?
A: 24 weeks—starting the first week of January and running through mid-June.
Q: What salary and benefits are available?
A: $20,000 stipend, plus full medical benefits, paid vacation time, paid tuition and access to Ohio State's worl- class recreational facilities, digital equipment, top-notch libraries and a range of other offerings.
Q: Where would I work?
A: In private offices at The John Glenn School of Public Affairs in Page Hall, a modern glass and brick building in the heart of the Ohio State campus.
Q: Is housing provided by the program?
A: No, but affordable housing is readily available in the university area.
Q: Are travel or relocation expenses covered by the program?
A: Wish we could, but we don’t cover relocation expenses or costs associated with project-related travel.

Q. Who is eligible to apply?
A: If you are a print, broadcast or online journalist with five or more years of experience at a U.S. news organization (here or abroad), you are eligible to become a Kip.
Q: Do internships and freelance assignments count toward the required five years of professional experience?
A: If you worked at least 20 hours a week, you can count Internships and freelance work for established media organizations. Be sure to tell us in your application how long you spent in those positions.
Q: What will I be doing?
A: You’ll participate in thought-providing Kiplinger seminars, events and other activities. You also get to focus on your in-depth project (fellows agree not to do outside professional work). And you’ll give back to the university by mentoring students and lecturing in classes.
Q: Do I need an approved leave of absence from my employer to be eligible?
A: : Only if you want one. If so, work out details in advance with your newsroom.
Q: Am I required to return to my news organization once the fellowship has ended?
A: No, but the goal of the program is to help those who plan to return to the journalism field.

Q: What kind of public affairs projects have fellows completed?
A: Public affairs projects can cover a wide range of topics, such as the mortgage crisis or environmental and health care issues—in essence any issue that impacts the public. You get to choose a project you’re passionate about (to see other fellows’ projects, click here).
Q: Does my project have to be published online for me to successfully complete the program?
A: We’re looking for journalists who are dedicated to producing powerful stories and committed to making sure they’re published. We understand that projects are sometimes published after the fellowship ends.
Q: Does my project need to be based in Ohio?
A: Most fellows produce projects based in their own communities. They schedule time (around classes and Kiplinger programming) to return home to complete their reporting.

Q: How are fellows affiliated with Ohio State?
A: During your time in the program, you are a full-time employees of The Ohio State University. You have full university benefits, including insurance benefits, accrued vacation time, and up to nine hours of tuition reimbursement each quarter.
Q: The deadline for applying for the fellowship is July 31. Does that mean the information has to be in your hands on that date?
A: Yes, we must RECEIVE your application and all accompanying information by the deadline. Please send your application packet early so it has plenty of time to arrive by July 30.
Q: When will I find out if I get the fellowship?
A: Typicallly, we begin reviewing applications in August and contact finalists for interviews by October.
